🫣 Are you ready for the temptation? 🫣
This is what I know as a substance-use psychologist and specialist:
👉 Warm weather, sun, patios, outdoor activities, weddings, bbqs… all these events mean alcohol and drugs are coming out of the closet in a big way.
I don’t say this to shame. I say it to help you prepare.
Because if you or someone you know struggles with an addiction or addictive behaviour – having a game plan is the ULTIMATE protection and empowerment!
So what can you do if these events trigger you?
👇Here’s my general advice👇
(if you want guidance unique to you, DM me to book a session)
👋 Have an out: it’s important to celebrate and connect with family, friends, and teams. Relationships are important! But if you find yourself entering your danger zone, have a way out prepared.
This could be a call to someone you trust or lining up an important task you absolutely have to complete! Get creative and don’t feel bad. You need to protect your wellness more than you need to have a beer.
⏱️ Set a time limit: it’s no surprise to any of us that the longer an event with alcohol goes on, the riskier the behaviour becomes.
So set a time to leave. It could be an hour, could be more or less, it’s up to you. If you need help sticking to your time limit, schedule an activity you can’t get out of (massage, dentist, or a different ‘sober’ social engagement).
♥️ Stay connected to a positive-support person: do you have a friend you’ve shared your struggle with? Or are you that friend for someone else?
A positive-support person can guard your sobriety through their honest presence. They also can give you an out or time-limit BECAUSE…they care about you. If you think the event you’re attending could trigger your addiction
